The jump from Windows to Ubuntu

I’ve now been involved in web development for about five years. It’s been a HUGE learning experience, and I’ve come to understand that when something new presents itself, you should, at the very least, give it a try.

I’ve never been a fan of Microsoft. Virtually everything I’ve used from MS has lead to nothing short of a headache. Granted, I use software far more than the average user, but one would think that a company as big as MS could make software that can cope with the growing needs of the web development community.

In my case, it hasn’t come close.

I could give you ample examples, but to keep this post short, I’ll stick to the most recent annoyance. The latest headache comes in the form of an operating system known as Windows Vista.

Sometimes I think there should be a permanent indentation on my desk from banging my head against it. Windows Vista, to be honest, is a complete nightmare. Sure, if you just use your computer for basic functions, it will not only get by, it will also make it look like it’s doing it very well. But the moment you start getting into multiple programs and fast paced PC usage, Vista crumbles.

I’ve recently picked up a new PC. I don’t feel the need to give you the specs, but let’s just say, it’s got all the goodies it needs to keep up with me. After just three months, however, it has gone in to a “grumpy” mode where it just doesn’t like to do what I tell it to do. This is in no way thanks to the hardware. No, this is all compliments of Windows Vista.

The lesson I’ve learned here is, when someone, no, MANY people say there is a better alternative, I should pay a little more attention and try stepping out of my “familiar zone”. In this case, give Linux a try.

I’ve been told I needed to try Linux for a bout a year now. For some reason, it always seemed such a “jump” for me and I never really wanted to explore the option. But alas, the jump has been made.

Welcome to Ubuntu.

Ubuntu

Not only is Ubuntu superior to Windows, it’s absolutely INCREDIBLE!

I made the switch last night, and right now I feel like I felt several years ago when I ditched Internet Explorer in favor of Firefox. I remember the first week of Firefox. I was like a kid at Christmas, drooling over my new toy. After about a week of Firefox, I vowed never to go back to Internet Explorer again. And I never did.

I’m now swearing the same with Windows.

Ubuntu is sexy, sleek, light weight, and VERY fast! I can’t believe I’ve waited this long…

The only downsides are that you lose the use of programs such as iTunes and other mainstream software tools. But in my opinion, the trade was well worth it.

A huge THANK YOU is in order for the Ubuntu developers! I give the operating system five stars. Microsoft is no where even close to being able to provide this level of satisfaction.
