for now

When a Chicago Alderman had letters sent to business owners in the Lincoln Square area of the city, he had no idea what he was in for politically.

Several of the business owners instantly began organizing and a site was launched to counter the abuse of Eminent domain. The site, Save Lincoln Square, has sparked a large scale protest against the Alderman and the city of Chicago.

In the Lincoln Square case, the government wants the property so they can sell it to wealthy, well connected developers for high profile condo structures. Basically, they want something that will generate more revenue.

On December 5th, 2007, the Save Lincoln Square organizers put on a rally that brought together several hundred citizens. The group marched to the Alderman’s office in protest of the Eminent domain abuse.

Save Lincoln Square

The Alderman has temporarily folded and the business being threatened with eminent domain are, for the time being, safe. But it kind of makes you shake in your boots to think that the law is written to allow the government to take property for profit doesn’t it?

Keep an eye on Save Lincoln Square for updates.
