Using a static homepage for a Wordpress site
A friend of mine recently asked me about creating a static homepage so that his Wordpress site had a main page that worked more like a static website. I think he was able to get it all set up and functioning properly, but at the time I didn’t have a web page to direct him to that had comprehensive instructions on setting it all up.
Thanks to the Blogging Experiment, we now have a step-by-step guide on using Wordpress as a static home page.
FYI for Blogivists: While this can be done on our system, you cannot edit the code in your navigation area. The above method is designed for self-hosted Wordpress blogs.

Without question… the growth of Wordpress is in no way slowing down. In fact, the reach of Wordpress grows leaps and bounds with each new day.
Thanks to the heads up over on the Wordpress Publishers blog, I see that Arena Magazine is now powered by Wordpress.
Arena Magazine, from what I understand, is a fairly well known brand with a decent sized following. It’s encouraging to see a large scale site such as Arena not only embrace Wordpress, but in doing so embrace open source software.
Arena isn’t the first, of course. Just days ago the Wordpress Publishers blog linked to Revista, another online magazine site powered by Wordpress.
I think this is a positive move for both sites, and I look forward to seeing others begin shifting in this direction as well.
As Wordpress advances and becomes much more like a full scale CMS, us users will be able to do a lot more with the software and many more doors will open up.
Good stuff!
It’s a cold and snowy Monday morning here in Chicago, so nothing could start the day off better than a good cup of coffee and the discovery of a new Wordpress theme.
Meet Blue Dream.
Blue dream is a clean and revenue ready Wordpress theme with a three column layout and a top navigation that gets right to the point. The theme comes preloaded with a killer set of icons that sit at the top right of the design. There is one for feedburner, one for Technorati, and one for RSS.
Blue Dream is widget ready, and looks like it will be fairly easy to edit or customized to meet your needs.
The only downside that I can see is that the theme appears to load a bit slow. Not sure what the hang up is, but both times I pulled up the page the theme struggled to “pop” in to view.
If you can get that fixed, you’ll find this to be a great theme. Visit the official theme page and grab a copy.
I’ve been meaning to get this post up, but thanks to time constraints and a very busy week I simply haven’t had the chance until now. So here goes…
Did you know you can actually get a custom Wordpress theme designed for less than $100? Believe it.
If you’re on the constant look out for a solid, experienced, “off the beaten path” Wordpress Theme designer, Girly Blog Designz might be a great place to start. Yes, I’m posting affiliate links here, but I have a unique attachment to GBD that most do not.
I host two blogs that use some of their best work to date. These two bloggers are taking advantage of my free Wordpress hosting over at Conservablogs.com, and their designs, thanks to GBD, are two of the best Continue Reading
Phil Hughes, pitcher for the New York Yankees, recently started a Wordpress.com blog. His blog is kind of cool because it shows more personal side to Hughes compared to what you would get with the media or the Yankees PR machine.
Hughes has yet to edit his about page, so you won’t find much there, but he has a handful of posts up with topics ranging from ideas on what to on over the weekend to spending time with family over the holidays.
I wish more people of his status level would join the rest of us in the blogosphere. It’s pleasant to know we’re all one big community and people like Hughes feel they need to be a part of it.
Oh… and yes… I’m still a Cubs fan.
I’ll be honest here… I wouldn’t have written this post if I hadn’t read WPCandy’s Wordpress Hoodie contest post. Not because I’m only in it for the Hoodie, which would be super cool to win, but because I had no idea that Brian Gardner was involved in the Chicago Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk.
Before getting to Brian Gardner, let me say that I’ve seen the ads for this event all over Chicago. In fact, I think I saw one on the CTA “L” this evening on my way home from work.
I’ve often pondered the event, and even wondered if it was something I could Continue Reading
Last Saturday night I installed Wordpress in one of my sub-directories to work on a few themes I’m using on other blogs. It was sort of a pain because I had to change permissions, flip back and forth to grab sidebar code from existing themes, and it just wasn’t a smooth process over all.
Then, yesterday morning I opened up my RSS feeds and found, via Blog Perfume, a great Wordpress plugin called “Theme Test Drive“.

Theme Test Drive Wordpress plugin allows you to safely test drive any theme on your blog as administrator, while visitors still use the default one. It happens completely transparently and they will not even notice you run a different theme for yourself. Best part is you can even set the testing theme options (if it has them) in the Admin panel while you are testing the theme.
Testing themes will, without doubt, be MUCH easier now.
Well, not necessarily my “top five picks” of all time; Rather, my top five picks from the Smashing Magazine 100 Excellent Wordpress Themes list.
#1: WP-Polaroid
I was pleased to see Adii release a public version of his own theme late last year. I’ve always been a fan of his blog design and it’s good to know that the rest of us are now welcome to use it.

#2: Structure
This is the coded theme we’re using over Continue Reading
